Hi, I'm Taylour Mackay, the founder and CEO of BitMedley as well as the creator of POWER CSV. As a software engineer who has worked in the financial analytics software industry, I understand just what an invaluable tool Microsoft Excel is. Used by millions of individuals and businesses across the world, Excel is one of the most popular and versatile software applications ever developed. However, one feature that has plagued Excel users for years is its built-in CSV functionality. Not only is Excel's built-in CSV functionality inflexible and cumbersome to use, it is also extremely unreliable and more often than not ends up corrupting your data! Worse yet, many people are unaware of Excel's dismal CSV support and unknowingly create and pass along corrupted data. At BitMedley, we created POWER CSV to give Excel the upgrade it so desperately needed — extending its functionality and transforming it into the world's most powerful CSV editor!

CSV (comma-separated value) files are a type of text file that contains tabular data. Because of their simplicity and their low overhead, they are an extremely popular file format for transferring data between applications. When Microsoft Excel is installed on a computer, it associates itself as the default application to open the CSV file type, but CSV files are not a native Excel file type. CSV files are simply text files that can be opened in any text editor whereas Excel files are much more versatile and can contain worksheets, charts, pivot tables, formulas, macros, and cell and font formatting. Spreadsheet applications like Microsoft Excel are ideally suited for viewing CSV files since they naturally display data in rows and columns, but unfortunately, Excel's built-in CSV functionality is full of limitations and problems that often lead to data corruption. The issues with Excel’s built-in CSV functionality are vast: data corruption issues include internationalization problems, date and date-time formatting, numeric truncation, rounding, and conversions to scientific notation, as well as character encoding and Unicode support issues. Excel’s built-in CSV functionality also doesn’t support files with more than one-million rows and it offers limited flexibility with respect to its import and export functionality.

After many years of development, POWER CSV is at long last fully equipped, capable and ready to step out into the production world. We wanted the feature set in our initial release to be comprehensive — not only does POWER CSV transform Excel into the world's most powerful CSV editor, but it also adds an invaluable set of tools for viewing, selecting, editing, and analyzing data.

POWER CSV was built using three key principles:

  1. Reliability
    1. Excel's built-in CSV functionality can corrupt data which can create major problems for you and your business. POWER CSV had to be rock-solid reliable with your data.
  1. Flexibility & Configurability
    1. The CSV file format is not standardized and many different variations exist. POWER CSV needed to be the most flexible and configurable GUI based CSV editor. The import and export functionality offer unrivaled auto-detection and flexibility. In addition, everything in POWER CSV can be configured through its powerful settings so you can optimize your work-flows.
  1. Beauty & Simplicity
    1. We want to create a product as beautiful as it is functional. The POWER CSV user interface is not only powerful, it is also simple and intuitive to use. Although POWER CSV is fully documented, replete with lots of useful information and tips for its use, it has next to no learning curve. Anyone can start using POWER CSV right away!
